We Survived PSG!!!

What a great time we had at PSG! MoonRaven and I got to spend the entire week with mother nature and a great group of like minded individuals! It was SO MUCH FUN! We had the best neighbors! Gypsy & Hippie - thanks for all the hospitality, David - thanks for the extra shade tarp! Denise - thanks for all the laughter! :o) You made it special!

MoonRaven played her Singing Bowl during the Labyrinth ritual. It was very beautiful! In fact, I think there are quite a few new Singing Bowl players out there now, thanks to her. She can get anyone playing a Singing Bowl in just a few minutes. In fact, at one point, I think we had about 5 of them going at once! :o)

Another kewel thing we got to witness was the incredible bonfires and the even more incredible Fire Performers! I took some great pictures and I'll see if I can get permission to post a couple of them! You will not believe that these people were not actually on FIRE!!! It sure looks like it! Very HOT!!! ...too much to tell now, you'll have to wait until next time.

How To Play A Singing Bowl

There are two basic ways of playing a singing bowl: you can either strike it with a wand or mallet like a bell for pulsating tones; or you can rub around the edge with a wooden ‘wand’for a sustained effect (in a way similar to that of rubbing a finger around the edge of a wine glass). With both mallets and wands the basic rule is that the larger the bowl - the larger the wand/mallet.

Resting the bowl upon the palm of your hand will usually give you to better experience than placing the bowl on a cushion on a tabletop when using the mallet. Using the wand and by just resting the bowl in the palm of the hand, the lower sounds will be accentuated. Dampening the bowl by bringing your fingers up lightly around the bowl will decrease the lower sounds and accentuate the higher tones, however, too high up and the sound stops!

The pressure that you use to apply the wand onto the rim of the bowl will affect the sounds the bowl produces, as will the speed with which you rotate the wand. It’s also true that the wood from which the wand is made makes a tremendous difference to the sound produced by the bowl. Too much or too little pressure, or the wrong speed, will cause a nasty ‘rattling’ sound that most people dislike - and a common complaint from novices.

All parts of this small, evergreen tree are aromatic; the smooth, gray-white bark, narrow to eliptic shiny green leaves; solitary yellow flowers; and glossy brown seeds. The distinctive seeds and pods are used as a spice in Asian cookery, notably as an ingredient of Chinese five-spice powder.

The fruits and foliage yield an essential oil, used as a substitute anise seed flavoring, or, medicinally to relieve chest complaints, rheumatism, and flatulence. The oil appears in soaps, hair oils, and Asian perfumes.

Chew the seeds after a meal to help the digestion. Simmer the seeds to make a tea for colic and rheumatic complaints. Steep one teaspoon of the crushed seed in one cup of boiled water for twenty minutes and take up to two cups a day. Often added to other brews to improve taste, the tea of the seed will help cramps and nausea, promote menstruation, and increase breast milk. It also relieves insomnia. The seeds are simmered into salves for scabies and lice. The oil is a stomach tonic. The seeds can be tinctured in brandy (rather than the usual vodka, whiskey, or grain alcohol) with some lemon peel; the dose is one-fourth to one-half teaspoon.

Magical Uses: The powdered bark is used as an incense in Japanese temples. The tree is planted by the Japanese around temples and on graves as an herb of consecration and protection. The seeds are burned as incense to increase psychic powers, and are also worn as beads for the same purpose. Sometimes star anise is placed on the altar to give it power; one is placed to each of the four directions. It is also carried as a general luck-bringer, and the seeds make excellent pendulums. The tree is often grown near Buddist temples where it is revered.
